About Tethered Cord Syndrome/ Filum Disease

Disclaimer: Anything found on this website is for awareness only and not to be taken or interpreted as medical advice.

Tethered Cord Syndrome is a neurological disorder in which an excessive traction force is present on the spinal cord due to a "tether", limiting natural movement of the spine, and can contribute and/or be the direct cause of many symptoms and comorbidities. Filum Disease is a subset of Tethered Cord in which the "tether" of the spinal cord is caused by a diseased Filum Terminale, a fibrous length of tissue found at the end of the spinal cord and connects to the coccyx (tailbone).

Possible symptoms and secondary diseases of Tethered Cord and/or Filum Disease are included but not limited to those found in the below listings.  Each patient will ultimately be a unique presentation of symptoms.

About Filum Terminale Release Surgery

The surgery was developed from Dr. Royo Salvador's theory in which the Filum Terminale is the pathological cause to "Filum Disease." The mechanism of the surgery is to release the Filum Terminale in an extradural manner, an approach in which there is no cutting through and into the dura matter, the membrane that surrounds the spinal cord.  For patients who also present with Chiari alongside Tethered Cord, this can be an alternative approach to a Chiari Decompression, a surgery in which skull bones at the back of the head are removed.
